Dr. Beth Bloom

Hello and thank you for visiting my website. I am a Licensed Psychologist with clinical experience dating back to 2007. In 2013, I opened and maintained a robust private practice for several years in New York City, before relocating to my current Portland location in 2019. I have specialized training in contemporary psychoanalytic psychotherapy, relationally and interpersonally focused psychodynamic approaches, mindfulness and acceptance, working with young to middle-aged adults, and people struggling with eating disorders, compulsions, and addictions. I am currently in training to provide psychoanalysis, which is a form of treatment that involves meeting even more frequently and usually for a longer period of time—it is often described as helping with “deeper” issues and concerns.

My work is primarily focused on individual treatment with adults, but I have worked with a broad spectrum of patients through various modalities, including individual, family, and group therapy, as well as people from all walks of life in all age ranges. I have experience supervising the provision of therapy, conducting extensive psychological assessments, providing community presentations and interventions, and assisting in teaching graduate level coursework in psychology, including psychological testing and assessment labs.

I enjoy working with a variety of individuals from diverse backgrounds, and I find differences to be an important part of what informs our unique experiences, such as our values, how we make sense of our world, and ways in which we relate to others. These important aspects of one's identity include but are not limited to: age, race, ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, religious or spiritual identifications, socioeconomic status, country of origin, educational level, and ability. I wholeheartedly welcome and embrace all those who have felt marginalized, oppressed, or a lack of belonging in any community, past or present.

I am an engaged, insight-oriented therapist. My therapeutic approach is to provide support and real help to assist patients in effectively addressing personal life challenges. I highly value focusing on emotional, relational, and cultural aspects of identity and experience, and I do my very best to meet my patients where they are in order to understand them and facilitate their developing, interdependent personhood. I aspire to accomplish this--and have been given the feedback that I do--with a great deal of presence, awareness, patience, appreciation, and empathic attunement. With compassion and understanding, I work with each individual to help them build on their strengths and attain the personal growth they are committed to accomplishing.
